Ear tuners tune chords, two or more notes struck at the same time to form harmonics. The harmonics are what the ear tuner listens to and manipulates when tuning your piano. The difference tones and harmonics are the very essence of the chords. It is what gives music its very soul.

Ear tuners, on the average, apprentice for three years with masters in the trade. Johann Sebastien Bach was an ear tuner. He gave us the equal temperament, which is the foundation of all tuning. That is why he is known as “the father of modern music.”

When my wife Phyllis and I first came to Atlanta in 1974, I was fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of Calvin King (a blind piano tuner), who did piano tuning and repair in the metro Atlanta area. Calvin and I had a mutual respect for one another's work. Blind tuners can only tune pianos by ear. Their hearing is sharper than a sighted person's hearing; they literally see and hear with their ears. Although I am fortunate to have my sight, I do tune pianos by ear. I not only tune by ear, but have mastered the art of aural (ear) piano tuning. Piano tuning by ear is the first step toward being a master piano tuner.

However, a master piano tuner must also have the training and experience necessary to perfect his craft. Calvin King used to tell me that when he sat down to tune and service a piano in a customer's home, a piano that he had never seen before, he could tell if it had been tuned electronically. He could hear and feel the difference. Not only was the piano not in tune, but it lacked the soul, the passion, that only an aural (ear) piano tuner can give it. I too can hear and feel the difference. I am proud to pass on my expertise to my customers, so that when they sit down to play their piano, it will truly sing.

Atlanta piano tuning has come a long way since the 1970's. Piano tuners in metro Atlanta have come and gone. Here I am, forty years later, still tuning and servicing pianos with pride, in the tradition of Johann Sebastian Bach, the father of the equal temperament and aural piano tuning.

I have know Manny Loiacono for about 25 years. He has been tuning my home piano as well as the pianos at the church where I am Director of Music. I trust him completely.
